Sonos and Denon Settle Legal Dispute

Sonos and Denon owner Sound United reach a settlement over claims the Denon HEOS multi-room audio range infringes on Sonos patents. The terms of the settlement are confidential.

HeosThe legal dispute between the two companies started back in October 2014, when Sonos sued Sound United over what it claimed was infringement of "at least four" patents. In December 2017 a jury ruled in favour of Sonos on 3 of the claims, and ordered Denon to pay $2 million in damages dating from the 2014 HEOS launch through December 2016.

However Sonos was not happy with the result-- earlier this year Sonos filed another claim against Denon to extend damages through December 2017. Sonos even demanded "enhanced" damages due to the infringement being deemed "willful" by the previous jury, and insisted previous Denon owner D&M Holdings should be penalised for “inappropriate actions [that] caused Sonos to waste time and significant resources.”

The settlement has Sonos stop the legal action, and in turn Denon will drop an outstanding claim against Sonos. In addition, Denon states the "direction with HEOS is unchanged."
