Nortek Buys a Voice With Nuiku

Residential and commercial control and HVAC system supplier Nortek gets some voice control smarts as it acquires Nuiku, developer of a cloud-based natural language processing platform.

NuikuFinancial details of the deal are not available.

Founded in 2012, Nuiku offers an integration engine connecting voice commands with back-end user information to analyse commends and perform appropriate actions. The technology also adapts to user behaviour, and offers prompts, reminders and suggestions based on frequency of use and past requests.

"Nuiku is a leader in natural language processing and a terrific addition to our home automation capabilities," Nortek says. "The acquisition of the Nuiku technology adds key software capabilities to our portfolio of technology solutions, as well as seasoned engineers that are aligned with our focus of driving innovation across our businesses. We believe this acquisition will result in new, innovative combinations of our products that advance our position in the markets we serve."

In other Nortek news, the company also launches a technology incubation team-- one bringing together engineering staff across the company in the development of value-added customer solutions. The team will leverage on technology from recent Nortek acquisitions such as Nuiku and MiOS, and will initially focus on connected home and personal safety.
