Samsung Adds SmartThings Camera, Smart Plug, Light Bulb

The Samsung SmartThings home automation offering gets a trio of entry-level additions in the shape of the SmartThings Cam, SmartThings Wifi Smart Plug and SmartThings Smart Bulb.

Samsung smartthings“We want to help families keep their connected lives simple and seamless using SmartThings to bring together hundreds of popular smart home products in one platform,” the company says. “Our new SmartThings Cam, Wifi Smart Plug and Smart Bulb create new pathways into our smart home platform, where users will discover how everyday tasks can easily be automated.”

Designed for indoor use, the Cam is usable both with and without a SmartThings hub. It records full HD video with HDR through a 145-degree wide-angle lens, and also includes IR night vision and built-in two-way audio for easy communications via smartphone. Samsung adds 24 hours of free cloud storage, and customers can connect up to 4 Cams together. For more cloud storage and the ability to connect up to 8 Cams customers need to pay a monthly subscription fee.

Meanwhile the Wifi Smart Plug and Smart Bulb are exactly what it says on the tin. Both are wifi-enabled products, with the Smart Plug allowing for control using both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa while the Smart Bulb is a 9W LED bulb with 806 lumens of rated output in a warm white colour (2700K). It is dimmable, but cannot switch to other colours.
