Deutsche Telekom Joins Home Connect in Smart Home

Deutsche Telekom (DT) pushes further into home automation through a partnership with Home Connect, the platform created by BSH Home Appliances to connect appliances over the internet.

Deutsche Telekom smart homeThrough the partnership Home Connect now pairs with DT's own Magenta SmartHome and the Qivicon platform. It allows customers to remotely control and monitor appliances, for instance checking the remaining cycle times of a connected washing machine or simply control lighting. The system also allows for macros, so one can have a favourite playlist start as soon as an appliance in the basement finishes a cycle.

Control comes through Deutsche Telekom app, and compatible appliances include Bosch/Junkers heating systems, Nest Protect smoke alarms, Schellenberg motorised blinds, doors and gates, Osram and Sengeld lighting solutions, and Bitron Video, Centralite and Logitech security products. Customers can also pair the Deutsche Telekom app with the Amazon Echo (and eventually Google Home) for voice-based home control.  Further vendors can join the initiative, since the open Qivicon smart home platform is part of the DT white label portfolio.

"International growth is a strategically important aim for us,“ DT says. "The modular design of the White Label portfolio allows our partners to create smart home solutions to suit their target market." The platform already supports more than 250 devices from a multitude of manufacturers and brands, that partners can mix and match to create their own offerings."

DT also offers smart home through an own hardware kit-- a package consisting of an HD streaming camera, remote-controllable adapter plug and a mangetic contact door/window sensor.
