Sonos Dumps Remotes, Prefers Smartphones

No more hardware controllers for Sonos-- The Verge reports the company will stop selling the CR200 remote control (aka the Control) from June 1 2012.

Sonos CR200Instead customers will have to use either free PC and Mac software controllers or mobile device (Android and iOS) apps. Sonos founder and CEO John MacFarlane says "we knew from the early days of the iPhone explosion that controlling our system from the device that people were carrying around in their pockets is what we wanted."

Sonos launched a free Sonos Controller iPhone app in 2008, and still issues regular updates (Sonos System software is currently at version 3.7).

If any of your customers still want a Sonos remote, the company will honour product warranties for 2 years from date of registration and continue software updates "for the forseeable future."
