Samsung Teams Up With ADT in Home Security

Samsung brings security specialist ADT to add optional monitoring services to the SmartThings home automation offering, bringing a combination of DIY smart home products and professionally installed and monitored security systems.

Samsung ADT securityDubbed the ADT Home Security Starter Kit, the base bundle includes a Security Hub, two door and window sensors and a motion sensor. The Security Hub features a 7-inch touchscreen, built-in siren, battery, cellular data backup and encrypted wireless technology. It also acts as a SmartThings hub, meaning it connects with SmartThings devices as well all the security sensors found in the package.

Samsung also plans to add other security devices in the future, including fire, carbon monoxide and water sensors. Control comes through companion SmartThings mobile device app, while the ADT partnership provides optional subscription-based 24/7/365 professional monitoring.

Ring Takes on Home Security

Video doorbell maker Ring is the next company to take on home security with Ring Protect-- a means to tie together the company's cameras, lights and doorbells into a single home security solution.

Ring ProtectThe Protect package includes a hub device, a door/window contact sensor, an IR-based motion sensor, a keypad (for arming/disarming) and a Z-Wave range extender. Customers can add more sensors to the system and, following a firmware update, security devices from 3rd parties such as locks, lights, carbon monoxide detectors, thermostats and sensors.

Nest Takes on Home Security

The next product category for Google-owned smart thermostat maker Nest is security-- Nest Secure, a product portfolio covering the alarm system, video doorbell, security camera and corresponding software and services.

Nest SecureThe centerpiece of Nest Secure is the Nest Guard, a puck-shaped security base providing the alarm, keypad and voice feedback. It is placed indoors, facing the front door, and communicates with a set of motion sensors dubbed Nest Detects. Customers can place the Detect devices anywhere in the home, such as rooms, near windows and doors. In addition, a Tag keychain can arm and disarm the security hub without need to insert a passcode in the Guard.

Also in the range is the Nest Hello-- a video doorbell combining the previously released Nest Cam with, well, a doorbell. For customers wanting an outdoor security camera Nest has the Cam IQ, a tamper- and weather-resistant version of the Nest Cam offering imaging and intelligence via built-in Google Assistant.

August Updates Smart Locks

August presents a pair of smart locks-- the Smart Lock Pro and the next generation Smart Lock, both featuring DoorSense, a sensor allowing the locks to detect whether the door is open or closed.

August lockAs one might expect from the name, the Smart Lock Pro is the full-featured August smart lock offering. It supports wifi via included Connect bridge, as well as Bluetooth, HomeKit and Z-Wave Plus. It also includes Active Monitoring, a service providing users with "smarter" alerts for any activity at the door, including the aforementioned DoorSense feature.

Meanwhile the regular Smart Lock is a lower-cost version offering basic functionality, if with the addition of DoorSense to ensure the door is securely closed and locked.

The Smaller Otto Smart Lock

Startup Otto presents a different take on the smart lock-- the Otto Lock, a circular device much smaller than most other smart locks currently available on the market.

Otto LockFounded by former Microsoft, Apple and Nokia employees, Otto hopes aesthetics will be enough to draw customers to its smart lock. It is around the size of a standard lock, has no keyhole and offers all expected smart features. To unlock the door, users can simply tap the lock with their smartphone within Bluetooth range.

One can also rotate the Otto Lock like a combination lock to punch in a PIN in case their phone is dead, or unlock it remotely via companion app and wifi connectivity. Home automation support is not included on launch, but the maker says it will be adding Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit support later on.

Schlage Smart Deadlock Works With Android

Android-using customers get another smart door lock option-- the Schlage Smart Deadbolt. The company also launches the Sense Wifi Adapter, a means to remotely control the smart lock.

Schlage lockAs the flagship Schlage smart lock, the Smart Deadbolt was previously only compatible with iDevices. The companion smartphone app allows users to create up to 30 unique access codes, schedule when said codes are use and monitor past lock activity. The lock relies on keycodes, meaning it cannot be spoofed like some wireless systems can be, and uses Bluetooth to confirm the person entering the code is the one linked to the code in question.

Ring Intros Spotlight Cams

Ring makes a trio of additions to the Floodlight Cam outdoor security camera line-- the Spotlight Cams, with models featuring either wired, battery or solar power.

Spotlight CamThe Spotlight Cams are similar to the Floodlight Cam, but feeature a different lighting system in the shape of LED panels that automatically turn on when the cameras detect motion. In addition, they also feature a 1080p camera with night vision, two-way audio and a 110 dB siren. User control and integration with other Ring products come through the companion Ring app.
