Stealth Patio Theatre Debuts at ISE 2016

Stealth Acoustics announces the European debut of the Stealth Patio Theatre (SPT) takes place at ISE 2016.

Stealth Patio TheatreThe SPT is a weatherised and fully protected outdoor cinematic system integrating a large high-resolution LED display with Stealth Acoustics IP-68 rated loudspeakers and subwoofers coupled with Stealth Acoustics amplification and DSP. Quiet-running lift automation hides the display in a custom-designed sealed enclosure when the SPT is not in use.

A 1080p system processor handles playback from up to 7 sources, including a Blu-ray player and streaming services. Installers can also integrate the system with 3rd party control systems.

A Glyph Headset to Replace the TV?

A startup named Avegant presents a wearable alternative to large TVs, if not home theatre setups-- the Glyph, a headset designed primarily for the consumption of media.

Glyph headsetFirst seen in a January 2014 Kickstarter campaign, the Glpyh looks like the lovechild of a Geordi La Forge (from Star Trek) costume and a pair of oversized headphones. The band part of the headset rests on the nose via interchangeable nosepads, and projects images directly into viewers' eyeballs via low-power LED and 2 million micromirrors (microscopic aluminium mirrors transforming light into pixels).

Strategy Analytics: Connected TV Device Shipments to Reach 221m

Strategy Analytics reports connected TV device (including Smart TVs, Blu-ray players, game consoles and digital media streamers) shipments will 221 million in 2015, following Q3 2015 shipments of 53m units.

Smart TVSuch results represent 17% growth for the full year.

According to the analyst the living room remains a battlefield for the likes of Apple, Roku, Google and Amazon, even if one company is the winner-- the Google Chromecast dominates 35% of the digital streamer market. Following are the Apple TV (20%), Amazon Fire TV (16%), Roku (16%) and other devices (13%).

Sky Presents Sky Q

British broadcaster Sky launches Sky Q-- a new brand of "next-generation home entertainment system" covering multiple hardware devices promising "a whole new way of watching TV."

Sky Q BoxThe Sky Q system is incompatible with previous Sky offerings (namely Sky+ and Now TV). All products feature wireless connectivity, viewing of live, recorded and on-demand content on TVs or tablets (an experience Sky calls "Fluid Viewing") and even connection to online video services such as YouTube and Vevo.

It features multiple devices, with the main being the Sky Q Silver-- an STB featuring a 2TB HDD and 12 tuners able to simultaneously record 4 channels. Connectivity comes through 2 F-connectors, 2 USBs, HDMI out, HDMI input (not enabled at launch), wifi and ethernet, and the STB supports streaming to 2 tablets and 2 Sky Q Mini STBs.

Also available is a regular Sky Q STB with 1TB of storage, 8 TV tuners and support for 1 tablet and 1 Sky Q Mini STB.

LG Installs Largest OLED Displays at Korean International Airport

LG OLED SignageLG presents two of the largest OLED displays around at Incheon International Airport, S. Korea-- specifically a pair of massive digital signage installations developed with French designers Wilmotte & Associés.

Each sign is 13m tall, 8m wide and consists of 140 55-inch curved OLED panels. The curved displays serve as giant OLED technology demos showing content such as fireworks against a night sky, and since OLED lacks heavy backlighting the airport displays actually hang from the ceiling with "minimal" support.
