IFA 2018 Launch for Samsung 8K TV

Samsung is all set for the next big thing in TV as it unveils the Q900R at IFA 2018-- a QLED 8K TV complete with "8K AI upscaling" the company says will be hitting stores as early as the end of September 2018.

Samsung 8K TVAvailable in 65-, 75-, 82- and 85-inch sizes, the Q900R offers a range of 8K-ready enhancements, all with names such as Real 8K Resolution, Q HDR 8K and Quantum Processor 8K. It features 7680 x 4320 resolution, four times of a 4K panel, with HDR 10+ technology optimised for such resolution and peak brightness reaching 4000 nits.

Two Wall Mounts From Vision

Vision has a pair of flat-panel wall arm mounts both promising to be stronger, more maneuverable and lower cost than the products they replace. Available in a white colour, they help the brackets disappear against white walls.

Vision MountBoth mounts are built out of 2.5mm cold-rolled steel, allowing for increased tensile strength and finer surface tolerance. The VFM-WA2X2v2 takes VESA sizes up to 200x200, and the WA4X4v2 takes sizes up to 400x400. Both have a 402mm reach, -2-12° tilt and 90° swivel adjustment. To help with installations, the mounts have 6° of rotation in case the wall bracket is not fixed plumb.

Sony Intros Master Series AF9, ZF9 TVs

Sony presents a pair of Master Series flagship TVs-- the AF9 OLED display and the ZF9 LCD, both running on the next generation Picture Processor X1 Ultimate and promising to deliver "the highest quality picture possible in a home setting."

Sony AF9The Picture Processor X1 Ultimate detects and analyses each object in the picture through object-based "Super Resolution," and further improves HDR quality by remastering each object individually for better depth, accurate texture and a more realistic picture. Netflix users get another boost through a Netflix Calibrated Mode able to reproduce the same picture quality as a studio evaluated master on TV from the streaming service.

The Master Series is also compatible CalMAN, the Portrait Displays calibration software. Thus, installers can calibrate the TVs through a CalMAN for Bravia app, available from the Google Play app store.

Samsung Brings Q8D QLED TVs to Europe

The European Samsung QLED TV range gets an addition with the Q8D-- a TV line available in 55-, 65- and 75-inch sizes complete with Full Array Local Dimming and HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG support.

Samsung Q8DKnown in the US as the Q8F, the Q8D does not have the peak brightness of the flagship Q9FN, even if promises a boost over other OLED displays with Q Contrast Plus promising "pristine contrast" and an anti-reflective covering improving daylight viewing. Samsung adds bright screens can affect colour, bringing about 100% colour volume technology for a "stunning visual experience" when paired with HDR.

On the smart feature side, an Ambient mode provides useful information such as news headlines, traffic reports and weather updates while the TV is not showing movies or shows. In addition, the mode can mimic the pattern on the wall behind the TV, allowing the display to turn sort-of invisible when mounted on said wall.

Samsung Readies The Wall for the Market

CES 2018 saw Samsung present The Wall, a 146-inch concept TV built out of microLED technology. Now the S. Korean company says the TV is set to become an actual product, with mass production starting on September 2018.

The WallAccording to the Korea Herald, the TV will find use in both commercial and consumer markets, with applications including luxury mansions, hotels, shops, stadiums, museums and convention centres. Interestingly, Samsung insists the Wall is a "display" or "screen," not a TV, since the technology allows for a custom set based on the number of display pieces customers want to attach to a, well, wall.

“We wouldn’t need to use the word TV for upcoming products,” Samsung tells the Korea Herald. “Consumers will be able to do anything they want with displays or screens that they feel comfortable with, just like mobile displays.”

Amazon Working on Smart TV?

Amazon plans a "next phase" in its fight against Sky, at least in the UK, the Telegraph reports-- an own smart TV, a co-development with a "group of Chinese manufacturers" including Huawei.

Amazon smart tvsAccording to the report, Amazon is taking on broadcast technology after the failure of the Prime TV streaming service to become a vialbe alternative to statellite and cable pay-TV. As such, it failed to gain distribution through the likes of Sky or Virgin Media, or attract mainstream channels from the likes of the BBC.

Loewe TV Joins The Cinema Designer

German high-end TV brand Loewe joins The Cinema Designer product designer, allowing installers to produce technically accurate media room designs for clients incorporating Loewe TVs through the TCD software.

Loewe TVOriginally created for high-end home theatres, the cloud-based software features a recently launched Media Room Pro tier complete with an expanded choice of products. TCD quickly calculates the RT60/500 Sabine equation, foot-lamberts calculation, flat panel display placement, seating configuration, immersive CODEC (up to 9.1.4) and loudspeaker and subwoofer placement of a media room.

3D CAD renders depict the finished room, and TCD integrates with D-Tools SI 2017 software to offer installers and dealers an all-in-one cinema design tool to export a TCD design into D-Tools via CSV file and calculate local area pricing, tax and related costs.
