Cancel Out the Vuvuzela on Your TV

  • PDF

They claim it is "the most annoying noise in the world." And if it isn’t, it’s close.

Watching the World Cup in South Africa, maybe you wished FIFA had gotten around to banning the vuvuzela noise-makers.

If you want to impress friends and potential clients, here are FOUR suggestions to fighting back.

vuvuzela

For 2.95 euros, you could buy the Anti-Vuvuzela Filter that creates a noise-cancellation sound (a wave with the same amplitude but with inverted phase to the original sound).

For this phase cancellation, you get an audio file that's 45 minutes long, ready to load onto your MP3 player or phone which you then plug into a speaker dock or hi-fi placed near the TV. But we suggest you don’t buy this… because on top of this “genius noise cancellation tool,” you will receive a FREE piece of innovative Internet TV. Whether you want it or not.

Another choice is to suppress the vuvuzela sound. Find the equalizer in the sound settings for the TV. Drop the 230-300Hz channel and raise the adjacent levels. That might not remove the vuvuzela noise completely, but it should dampen it down.

Or you can make your own filter. (See the first link below: sorry it’s only in German.)

The best solution seems to be from London's Centre of Digital Music which has analyzed the frequency and created a free filter. It has an audio processing plugin known as a "devuvuzelator" and detailed solutions for Linux, Mac and Windows. (See second link below.)

OK, we don't know if that any of this works actually works because we didn't try it. We actually like the So. African spirit. (See the third link below.)

Besides, it's fun to boost the sound to annoy our mates and loved ones. Viva Vuvuzela!

Certified Partner Program for Chief

Certified Partner Program for Chief

In general, AV lacks the sophistication that other industries have developed for their partners. That's changing and one good sign is that Chief Manufacturing has launched the industry's first certification program for mount solutions.

This Certified Partner Program offers interactive product and installation training to improve customers' business results, differentiate their business and improve overall mount product knowledge. Customers completing the course will receive exclusive benefits from Chief as well as earn InfoComm CTS RUs and CEDIA CEUs.

"Putting together the Certified Partner Program with our customers has been extremely beneficial," says Laurie Englert, Chief Marketing Director. "They not only helped to define the framework of the program, but their input has helped us customize each and every module to ensure we are zeroing in on what they need to know to make their installs faster, their specifying easier and overall improve their business results."

It took 3500 hours to create this program with its 13+ hours of content and 46 videos. Featuring Chief products and installation solutions, it's divided into two tracks—one for those who install or deal with technical aspects, and one for dealers or sales people focusing on configuring solutions or selling product. Each track focuses on specific needs and walks through common scenarios in applications (home theatres, classrooms, hotel lobbies, corporate offices, etc).

It takes 3-6 bours to complete an entire track but many modules take 30 minutes or less to complete so users can come back as often as they need.

3D@Home Consortium Releases Requirements

  • PDF

The 3D@Home Consortium sent key documents to be used in the creation of digital 3D standards by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) working groups.

The document ST2-01 3D Digital Interface Requirements enables the standards committees to have input from the wide cross-section of the industry which 3D@Home represents.

The documents ST4-03 3D Active Shutter Glasses Database and ST4-04 3D Passive Glasses Database assist the standards committees in understanding the range of products that will be interacting with the 3D systems.

Both documents were requested by CEA working groups as part of their discovery process before working on the technical details of the standards.

"This was a team effort that resulted in a good first step in CEA's efforts to understand how 3D glasses may be used in the home," noted Chris Chinnock, Chairman of ST4. "Developing a standard for 3D glasses will be challenging, but something that is desirable to help with compatibility issues. We will continue to work with CEA to support their standardization effort by providing information and recommendations from the experts who are members of the 3D@Home Consortium."
