NEC EX231W

NEC's MultiSync EX231W LCD display wins Germany's renowned iF international product design award 2011.

The prize-winning design of the NEC monitor was created by Japanese industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa.

MultiSync EX models, says NEC, are well received in the enterprise market thanks to their slim form, lightweight and extremely narrow stand. They can be stylishly integrated into office surroundings. "We expect future offices to become simpler and cleaner and the design of the monitors to become increasingly minimalistic to allow the image to take precendece."

Another special features include a stand and axis 75% smaller than any NEC stand before.

Vision Adds Security Cage to Techmount Range

  • PDF

While Vision is a major supplier of projector brackets in Europe (selling thousands of their popular Techmounts each month), up until now they haven't offered a projector security enclosure.

That changes at ISE this year when the new Techmount Cage will be launched.

Vision believes their new product is a genuine improvement on existing security enclosures. Rather than using sheer bulk to provide defence (which results in heavy, oversized, and ugly boxes), Vision designed a close-fitting cage that's lightweight (most cages weigh around 10kg but the TM-CAGE weighs 3.5kg) and fits together like a puzzle. That deceptively secure design is made even more formidable with two hardened locks that have built in motion-sensing alarms that sound a combined 113dB siren when they sense movement.

Available in eight different size combinations: you first select small or medium package which includes the top and bottom plates, locking collars, and locks. Then you choose a side panel package which includes eight sides and comes in four sizes.

Sliding side panels allow unimpeded connectivity, open airflow, and IR remote control access. 30° TILT pitch and roll adjustment. Foam blocks are included to isolate the projector from vibration

Less Units from Brands but OEMs Up

DisplaySearch's latest report shows major LCD TV brands reducing production plans-- while OEMs and ODMs increase their monthly shipments.

LCD Production ChartThe top 16 LCD TV brands' combined production plan is down from 18.3m (in November 2010) to 15.4m (in March 2011). Total Q1 2011 production will be 46.3m units-- 12% decrease from Q4 2010.

DisplaySearch says while many regions' TV demand is uncertain (due to an unstable market environment) some TV brands are increasing their production quantities-- due to anticipation of demand for Q1 2011 product launches.

LCD TV OEM and ODM's monthly shipments (from December 2010 to March 2011) are up-- indicating increasing manufacture outsourcing (due to cost management, logistics, manufacturing scale and panel supply).

The Top 10 LCD monitor OEMs will increase their production in January by 4.3%-- over 14m units.

Flat Panels For the Great Outdoors

Ciil FlatpanelCiil Technologies announces its range of fully-sealed HDTVs, with sizes starting from 32" to 55".

The company describes its sets as going "beyond weatherproof", being 100% sealed. Thanks to their fully-encapsulated dynamic thermal transfer system, internal components remain at the right temperature without vents, filters or exhaust fans. And without vents and filters, moisture and microscopic dust can't get inside.

With an IP (waterproof) rating of 68, the outdoor sets can also withstand pressurised washing from any angle and will continue working even if submerged. The company says the sets also have a NEMA (dust proof) rating of 6, and the highest operating range in their class.

LCD Market Slowdown Forecast for 2011

  • PDF

TV MarketW.W. TV shipments reach more than 247m units (17% increase over 2009) in 2010, despite slow economic recovery, with LCD dominating TV shipments.

LCD accounts for at least half of Europe's TV shipments-- but DisplaySearch predicts growth will slow down from double to single figures over the next few years. E. Europe should also overtake W. Europe in total LCD unit volume, as growth focus shifts to countries with lower flat panel TV penetration.

After growing by 31% in 2010, the W.W. LCD market's growth should slow down to 13% in 2011, the analyst says.

DisplaySearch expects LED-backlit to account for the majority of W.W. LCD shipments as the premium for LED models falls to less than 50% in 2011.

Customers will also still demand plasma TVs-- W.W. 2010 shipments reach over 18m units (28% increase over 2009) as plasma maintains its price decline rate.

IPTV's Quiet Revolution

  • PDF

DisplaySearch says 21% of 2010 W.W.TV shipments consist of IPTVs-- a marketshare to continue growing over the next 3 years.

IP TV ForecastThe analyst predicts global IPTV numbers will reach 122 million units by 2014.

Emerging markets are to play a key role in the segment's growth-- E. European sales should grow from 2.5m in 2010 to over 10m in 2014.

DisplaySearch expects the IPTV market to split into 2 categories-- basic sets (with enchanced broadcast services like Hbb.TV and YouView) and Smart TV (with configurable apps, sophisticated search and advanced user interfaces).

Google's take on Android-powered Smart TV should be joined by other operating systems in 2011, inclluding Linux (MeeGo). DisplaySearch says Google TV is not consumers' dream Smart TV-- but is a good lead into what works.
