Sharp: Apple TV Panel Supplier?

  • PDF

According to Chinese news site 21cbh.com, Sharp is the display panel supplier for the long rumoured Apple TV set-- and Foxconn expects to receive LCD panels for such a TV around Q3 2012.

Apple TVApparently Foxconn expected to start receiving Apple TV panels on Q4, but now the schedule has changed... rumours instead suggest the Apple TV set will hit the market "before the 2012 holiday season."

Foxconn owns a 10% stake in Sharp, with a deal prompting speculation on how the 2 companies plann to enter the supply chain for the now legendary Apple TV set. Sharp already supplies Apple with iPad Retina displays.

Meanwhile Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White adds to the rumours, saying Apple plans to use "a special type of motion detection technology on the future full blown Apple TV” together with a special iPad-style remote control with plastic (rather than aluminium) construction.

White also calculates Apple could generate up to $10 billion in sales should it manage to take over just 2% of the LCD TV market.

Sony and Panasonic, United in OLED

  • PDF

In a shaky TV market where no one (other than Samsung) makes a profit, it makes sense for rivals to team up in the fight against a common enemy-- now Panasonic and Sony start a joint OLED panel development deal.

Sony PanasonicThe team up involves the co-development of OLED technologies for the mass production of large, high resolution panels, with the two companies sharing core and printing (as in production) technologies.

By combining resources, Sony and Panasonic hope to establish mass production technology by 2013 and to start selling large OLED TVs by late 2013-2014.

Sony was the first company to sell OLED TVs, with the 2007 launch of an 11-inch model. With Panasonic's help, will it manage to regain foothold in a market dominated by the S. Korean competition?

Samsung “Smart Dual View” OLED TV

  • PDF

At the 2012 Samsung Premium TV Showcase in Korea, Samsung showed smart dual view OLED TV which offers two channels equally and simultaneously.

Samsung Dual TVWe’ve seen “smart dual view” before: “picture in picture” enabled viewing two channels--but the second channel was reduced in size and sans sound. With shutter glass 3D, consumers could watch two different programs simultaneously. One family member could watch a soap opera while another followed football—at the same time on same TV. (Samsung’s new OLED TV comes with two pairs of shutter glasses.)

OLED TV is not yet differentiated enough from LCD TV but if Samsung markets OLED TV with “smart dual view”, shutter glass 3D may become that missing commercial distinction.

That’s of Samsung doesn’t muck it up with using “Dual View” also as a marketing phrase in its mobile division as a way to move video from TV to mobile…
