Television? Now's the Time for Smell-O-Vision!

  • PDF

Researchers at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology present a high-tech twist on the Smell-O-Vision idea-- presenting a system that makes smells appear from any spot on an LCD display at the IEEE Virtual Reality conference, Orlando.

Odor TVNo, dear reader, we assure you this is not a rerun of that classic 1965 April Fool's Day prank, where BBC TV aired an interview with the alleged inventor of "Smellovision," never mind the far more recent "Google Nose" take on exactly the same joke...

Slightly more advanced than the scratch-and-sniff cards employed by John Waters in the "Odoroma" version of Polyester, the "smelling screen" developed by the Japanese team feeds odours from vaporising gel pellets into 4 air streams (one for each corner of the display). Fans blow out the air streams in parallel to the screen surface, varying strength and direction to guide smells into a particular spot on the screen.

Reportedly the airflow from the fans is gentle and accurate enough to trick viewers into thinking on-screen objects are actually creating the smells in question!

Global LCD TV shipments fall for the first time ever in 2012 DisplaySearch reports, dropping by -1% to 203 million units as economic conditions around the world remain challenging.

The year ended with Q4 2012 shipments failing to offset declines from the previous 3 quarters, with flat 0.6% Y-o-Y growth.

As a result the analyst issues a cautious preliminary outlook for 2013 LCD TV growth, despite "significant" reductions in plasma and CRT TV demand.

DisplaySearch: 4K LCD Panels to Reach 2.6m in 2013

  • PDF

According to NPD DisplaySearch global 4K (also known as Ultra HD) LCD TV panel shipments will reach 2.6 million units in 2013, up by over 40X from just 63000 in 2012.

TFT LCD panel suppliers are critical for 4K LCD TV adoption, providing cost-effective technologies (such as high-transmittance cell designs, high-output integrated circuits, high-efficiency backlights and integrated up-scaling circuits) to meet anticipated market demand for such displays.

Innolux Corp. is the most aggressive panel manufacturer to date, with a full line-up of 4K ranging from 39- to 85-inch in size. Other panel makers (AUO, LG Display, Samsung, Sharp) appear to be concentrating more on 50-, 55-/58-, and 65-inch panels-- the sizes expected to ship the highest volumes.

DesignLinePhilips TV shows off a different take on the traditional HDTV with the DesignLine-- an LCD display set behind a seamless gradient black pane of glass.

A "hallmark of lightness and transparency" (as the TP Vision PR puts it) the DesignLine lacks neck, stand or visible frame, and stands up by leaning against walls via "smart" mount.

The HDTV operates at 1400Hz and carries a dual-core processor, wifi, ethernet, x4 HDMI ports, MiraCast and 3D support, while Philips Ambilight technology on 3 sides provides matching lighting according to what is on screen.

The Philips DesignLine will be available in European markets in either 46- or 55-inch variants from Q2 2013.

Panasonic Considering Exit from Plasma?

  • PDF

Panasonic is planning to stop plasma TV operations as part of a downsizing of the troubled CE maker's TV business, Nikkei reports.

PanasonicAccording to the newspaper Panasonic will move away from TVs over the next 3 years in order to focus the more profitable auto part and aircraft businesses. Reportedly the company will end plasma production in Amagasaki, Japan by fiscal 2014, and has already stopped development of new plasma TV models.

It also forecasts TV sales of around $5 billion for the 2015-2016 period, down from the $10.5bn peak on 2009-2010. Panasonic hasn't made profits from TVs for the last 5 quarters.

In reply to the reports Panasonic simply says "we are considering a number of options regarding our TV business. But nothing has been decided yet."

Like the rest of the once mighty Japanese CE industry Panasonic has been trying to stave off its financial woes for a while-- 2012 saw it selling off a number of assets, including real estate. It is also co-developing large-size OLED panels and modules with Sony.
