GfK: 4K TV Becomes Standard

According to GfK, H1 2019 global TV revenues total €44 billion-- a -8% Y-o-Y decline, partly attributable to sales related to the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Global sales are set to total 210 million in 2019, a -2% decrease compared to 2018.

4K TV GfKThe analyst points out premium TV features, such as 4K resolution and OLED technology, are up in terms of sales share, while the TV sound ecosystem is thriving. For instance, 4K TV sales are up by 11% in H1 2019, and are expected to total 100m for full-year 2019. Meanwhile OLED penetration sees an 11% turnover share in Europe, and "robust" growth across the globe.

Motorola, Smart TV Maker

Motorola decides to do like smartphone rival OnePlus and launch an own smart TV range-- the imaginatively named Motorola TV, with sets ranging from 32- to 65-inch featuring IPS panels running on Android 9.0.

Like the OnePlus TV, the Motorola TV is primarily aimed at the Indian market. It is developed in partnership with Flipkart, a Walmart-owned online retailer that, in the subcontinent, rivals the mighty Amazon in size. According to Motorola the TVs offer bright images and wide 178-degree viewing angles, making them well adapted for Bollywood movies, and include Dolby Vision and HDR 10 capability.

Grundig Has Fire TV in OLED Screen

Grundig uses IFA 2019 to announce the Fire TV Edition-- a series of TVs including the first OLED TV with built-in Amazon Fire TV capability, available with or without far-field microphones allowing for voice control.

Based on "last generation" LG OLED panels with wide colour gamut and support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision, the Grundig OLED Fire TV Editions come in 55- and 65-inch sizes. Both feature a 10-speaker system able to output Dolby Atmos sound, while the Fire TV allows users to view both broadcast TV and content from a wide range of streaming services, including Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, ARD, ZDF, ProSieben, waipu.tv and more. The TVs also handle audio streaming from the likes of Amazon Music, Spotify and TuneIn.

Roku TV Arrives in Europe

IFA 2019 sees Roku bring its self-titled TV operating system to Europe, starting with the UK as Hisense announces the Q4 2019 launch of TV models sets running on the software.

Roku IFA 2019The Hisense Roku TV for the European market is a 65-inch model featuring 4K UHD resolution and HDR capability combined with the easy-to-use Roku OS complete with "thousands" of streaming channels. Roku TVs strip down the menus of smart TVs with a simple home screen showcasing all available content, including live programming, streaming movies or music, in one place. Control takes place using either simple TV remote or Roku mobile app.

The 8K Association (8KA) defines the key performance attributes for 8K TVs as part of the 8KA technical programme, with a list of criteria based on current and future technology trends.

Sharp Claims Biggest LCD TV at IFA 2019

Sharp takes to IFA 2019 to present what it claims is the biggest liquid crystal display-- a 120-inch behemoth making part of a "groundbreaking" 8K+5G Ecosystem showcase combining high-resolution displays and 5G connectivity.

It is important to point out the display is an LCD, since technically the biggest 8K TV currently in existence is The Wall Luxury, the 292-inch Samsung titan featuring on MicroLED technology. Sharp fails to give too many details on the 120-inch 8K LCD TV other than the inclusion of 5G connectivity, something the company says allows the TV to display works of art.

OnePlus Details TV Plans

OnePlus starts drip-feeding details on its upcoming TV, starting off with the name-- it's "OnePlus TV," shockingly enough-- and an initial September 2019 release date in India, with Europe to follow on a later, unspecified date.

Founder and CEO Pete Lau first took to the OnePlus forums to announce the TV plans back in September 2019. Back then, the promise was of a TV with "premium flagship design, image quality and audio," as well as the capability to "seamlessly connect the home." But why will it first launch in India? As Lau puts it, OnePlus has "a very positive relationship" with content providers in India, ensuring customers in the most populous democracy in the world have plenty to watch on their OnePlus TV.
