DreamScreen Kickstarts Smart TV Surround Lighting

  • PDF

DreamScreen follows on its self-titled home theatre lighting product with an upgraded  kit claiming to offer "HD, 4K, DIY and a surround lighting feature."

DreamScreenThe DreamScreen system places LED lights behind TVs and PC monitors able to react to the colour on the screen. The HD and 4K hubs use HDMI video and audio, with HDCP support, and turn TV shows, movies and games into an "immersive experience." The lighting reacts to on-screen colours at 60fps, retrofits to any size TV and connects to any device with an HDMI port.

The HD and 4K hubs allow up to 3 HDMI inputs, and feature CEC technology to allow users to easily toggle between viewing devices without missing on the lighting actions. Users can also customise their setup with several video and colour settings. Each hub supports two reels of FLEX LEDs to cover screens up to 130-inch in size, while the DIY option allows one to use own LEDs. An additional SideKick device adds small high brightness LEDs to further boost the surround reactive lighting.

Samsung and Amazon's HDR Standard

  • PDF

Samsung and Amazon join forces to add yet another HDR standard in the video mix-- HDR10+, an option the two giants say is better than the rest through a free and open nature.

HDR10PlusAs the name might suggest, HDR10+ is similar to the current HDR10 standard, but it does have a few differences. The chief addition is Dynamic Tone Mapping, a means for HDR-capable TVs to adjust brightness on a scene-by-scene or even frame-by-frame basis, producing "images that are much closer to the director's intent."

Dolby Vision already has such a dynamic metadata setup, unlike HDR10 which is stuck with static metadata. One has to point out Dolby Vision supports HDMI 1.4a and upwards, while HDR10 requires HDMI 2.0, but HDR10+ does not require TV makers to pay licensing fees.

Samsung Details The Frame TV

  • PDF

The Samsung 2017 TV lineup has a curious addition reminiscent of a relic from the (relatively recent) past-- The Frame is a TV doubling as a picture frame, much like the digital photo frames from the pre-iPad era.

The FrameThe result of a collaboration with famed industrial designer Yves Behar, The Frame even has an Art Mode where it displays over 100 pieces of art when not in use as a regular TV. It is designed to be hanged flush against walls, and for such purposes Samsung supplies a new gapless wall mount and an "Invisible Connection," single optical cable handling all connectivity.

Further details on The Frame, including size, are not available as yet. What Samsung does detail is its upcoming selection of QLED TVs, with options ranging from the 55-inch Q7 to the 75-inch Q8. All offer quantum dot technology, the OLED alternative Samsung insists offers a wider colour range (100% colour volume according to Verband Deutscher Elektrotechnieker) as well as higher brightness levels and deeper blacks.
