Smart home devices are fast becoming part of the mainstream, Futuresource Consulting reports-- the market is one of the fastest growing CE categories of 2017, with global revenues worth $6 billion.

Smart home marketSuch revenues are forecast to triple by 2021, reaching $18bn.

Best Buy Pins Improvement Hopes on Smart Home

Best Buy puts smart home as the cornerstone of a renewed retail strategy-- Best Buy 2020, a 3-year plan based on 3 tiers, specifically smart home, assisted living and in-home tech support.

As part of Best Buy 2020, the American retailer plans to enhance the smart home areas in all stores, roll out the Best Buy Smart Home Powered by Vivint automation and security offering to 450 stores, and add 1500 dedicated smart home employees. Another related expansion involves an in-Home Advisor program with 300 specially-trained advisors providing customers free in-home consultations related to home automation.

The Alexa-Controlled Smart Mattress

Sleep technology company Eight adds further capabilities to its smart mattresses with an Alexa skill allowing one to control such products through Amazon-enabled devices and voice commands.

Eight smart mattressThe "smart sleeping" products currently compatible with Alexa are the Smart Mattress collection and the Smart Mattress Cover. Users can state commands such as "Alexa, warm up the left side of the bed" or "Alexa the bed is too cold" to warm up the bed. In addition one can ask ask "Alexa, how did I sleep last night?" or "Alexa, what's my sleep score" to receive statistics related to their sleeping patterns.

Eight plans to add further Alexa commands later this year for more robust interactions between its products and the virtual assistants. Eight products already feature automation capabilities through If This Then That (IFTTT), but Alexa allows for perhaps simpler integration, not to mention control.

HomeKit-Enabled Elgato Offerings at IFA 2017

Elgato expands the HomeKit-enabled Eve product family with five accessories at IFA 2017-- the Eve Lock, Eve Window Guard, Eve Smoke, Eve Smoke and the second generation Eve Thermo.

Elgato home automation The new generation Eve Thermo smart radiator valve features capacitive touch controls and an integrated temperature display, allowing customers to directly monitor and adjust target temperature. It works right out of the box, with no need for extra bridge device or starter pack, and retains all the Eurotronic control technology found in the previous version.

Meanwhile the Eve Lock automatically secures latches and bolts once the door is locked, ensuring the door is safe at all times. Control comes through either Siri, Home app or Eve companion app, and HomeKit allows remote control in case of visitors. As an smart smoke detector, the Eve Smoke not only sets off a loud, pulsating tone in case of fire, but also sends HomeKit notifications and sets off scenes.

Crestron Pyng Gets Sonos, Alexa Support

The latest version of Crestron Pyng (v. 1.010.0038) has the addition of native Sonos and Amazon Alexa support, as well as features elevating the user experience while making integration easier for installers.

Crestron PyngNative Sonos sound system support allows the "effortless" integration of Sonos with Pyng as a multi-room audio source. One simply needs to pair Pyng Sonos Connects to immediately select and control Sonos favourites through Crestron touchscreens, such as the TSW-560P portrait model.

Meanwhile native Alexa support brings the Amazon voice controlled assistant to Crestron home systems without need for programming. Crestron says installers simply have to follow "some simple configuration steps." Once connected, Alexa automatically recognises rooms and scene names from Crestron Pyng for immediate voice control, such as "Alexa, tell Crestron it's too hot in the kitchen."
