SI Ships Black Diamond Screen

  • PDF

Screen Innovations (SI) kicks off global shipping of the Black Diamond projection screen-- a flat panel display alternative featuring SI ambient light rejection technology and a unique motorised design.

Black DiamondThe screen uses one motor, four custom helixes and a spool of slender aircraft cable to lower a thin wing containing the rolled Black Diamond screen from a recessed ceiling-mounted cassette. The wing then stops and a small tube emerges, dropping to an adjustable pre-determined image height to leave only image space in sight.

Black Diamond screens do not require masking or black drop material, meaning there is no visible material above, below or on either side of the screen surface.

According to the company the screen also delivers zero glare and reflection in bright environments, with the material reducing light scatter by over 75%.

Brighter Picos at No Extra Power

  • PDF

Texas Instruments' DLP unveils a new pico projector technology at MWC 2013, Barcelona-- IntelliBright, a means to improve on pico image brightness without increasing power costs.

IntellibrightThe technology in question is actually a pair of image processing algorithms, Content-Adaptive Illumination Control (CAIC) and Local Area Brightness Boost (LABB). DLP claims the algorithms "intelligently" analyse image content in real-time and create more vivid, higher contrast images (even in bright lighting conditions) without raising power consumptions.

The CAIC algorithm adjusts red, green and blue illumination levels on a frame-by-frame basis while the LABB algorithm adds an amount of gain to dark areas in each frame.

TI says DLP is already working with manufacturers to integrate IntelliBright technology in next generation pico projectors, together with the Tilt & Roll Pixel (TRP) chip architecture first introduced at CES 2013.

Stewart Intros Screens at ISE 2013

  • PDF

A number of Stewart Filmscreen projection solutions make a European debut at ISE 2013-- the Visionary Electrimask, Mystik!, Sabre, Director's Choice 100, Projection Ports and CIMA.

Stewart ISEThe Visionary ElectriMask extends the Vision Electriscreen (VE) screen by incorporating masking panels, providing multiple aspect ratios. It has a screen housing one can install during rough framing, with the screen fabric and masking retained at the factory to install separately post-construction.

For retail, personal or public venue applications demanding a 2-piece projection solution Stewart has Mystik!, a self-adhesive projection material designed for digital signage use. One can also apply the screen to windows or glass doors to create a transparent projection screen.

Another Stewart offering at ISE 2013 is Sabre, with a 0.25-inch beveled frame. It is standard in most popular architectural finishes, with custom finishes and colour matching also available, together with an optional inlaid Velux bar.

PMA: Projectors Hit 9.5m Units in 2012

  • PDF

According to PMA Research global projector volume hits 9.5 million units in 2012 with a "mild" increase over 2011 as challenging conditions in developed markets offset growth in emerging regions.

PMA ResearchGlobal sales within the New Era (sub-1000 lumens) range total 1.7m, with pico projectors growing by an impressive 35% and personal projects finishing the year "on an upswing" thanks to more vendors offering 500 lumens+ models in compact form factors.

Meanwhile Mainstream (1000-3999 lumens) projector sales are impacted in W. Europe by constrained education funding, even if PMA describes interactive projectors and ultra-short-throw projectors as "bright spots" in the region. On a global basis, both interactive and ultra-short-throw projectors show over 30% growth for 2012.

Finally High-End (4000+ lumens) projectors outperform the Mainstream market in 2012, with super-bright models (for conference room and outside venue use) showing double-digit growth. PMA says the entire segment shows positive performance, thanks to product depth and breadth satisfying venues and budgets of all sizes.

Mitsubishi Takes on Affordable 3D Projectors

  • PDF

Mitsubishi turned heads at CES 2013 with the HC8000-- an affordable ($3000) 3D home theatre projector gathering some fairly impressive reviews after the show.

HC8000It has a 333000:1 contrast ration and outputs 2000 lumens of brightness, with DLP technology handling both native 3D and 2D-to-3D conversion.

The company says the the 3D glasses are also redesigned, with black liquid-crystal technology designed to fully concord with the high-speed response from the DLP element.

Further features include a 1.5X zoom lens, integrated 6-segment 3D deep colour DLP colour wheel and both dual HDMI ports and component video input.
