Ikea Working on More Smart Devices

  • PDF

The Ikea smart home device lineup is set for further additions, Swedish tech blog Teknikveckan reports-- the furniture maker might add a range of smart plugs to the Trådfri smart lighting line.

Ikea smart plugsThe smart plugs should allow customers to control any offline product via app or remote control. Teknikveckan reports Ikea has two such plugs in the works, a "control outlet kit" with an on/off remote and a "wireless control outlet." The remote has around 10m range, and can be magnetically attached to metal surfaces, while the plug is compatible with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant and Alexa.

The Ikea take on smart home revolves around the Ikea store format-- since most of the furniture maker's business comes from in-store retail traffic, Trådfri products reside in the section containing smaller home goods, just before checkout. Such placement, combined with (relatively) low pricetags, allows for impuls purchases. In addition, since such devices are made in-house Ikea reaps all the profits, even as they slot into existing home automation ecosystems.

As well as the aforementioned smart lighting products, Ikea is also working on smart speakers, including a range developed in partnership with Sonos.
