Samsung's Harman Buys Arcam

  • PDF

Famous British hifi maker Arcam finds a buyer-- Harman International Industries, the owner of audio brands including AKG, JBL, Lexicon and Mark Levison.

Arcam demoFinancial details of the deal are not available. Breaking the news is an email to customers from Arcam director of sales and marketing Scott Campbell.

"Arcam and Harman share a like-minded passion for bringing the highest quality sound into people's lives," the email reads. "Harman recognises the value and potential of Arcam’s people, technologies, and brands, and we expect the combination will deliver growth opportunities and benefits to our customers. We believe this is an unprecedented opportunity to grow Arcam’s engineering capabilities and extend its product reach into new markets."

Post-acquisition Arcam will retain the current management team in Cambridge, England (where the company, then known as A&R, was founded), as well as sales and distribution channels in the US. Since 2012 Arcam has been a wholly owned subsidiary of JAM Industries, an audio gear and musical instrument distibutor based in Montreal, Canada.

Harman was acquired by Samsung for $8 billion, the biggest deal in the S. Korean giant's history, back in November 2016.
