Philips Adds Lasers to UHD TVs

Philips looks to diversify its UHD/4K TV offering from the rest of the CES 2015 competition with the addition of lasers-- the company's Smart Laser Backlight Ultra HD TV's backlight uses a red laser and cyan LEDs.

Philips TVAs the company puts it, "[the] technique creates an unparalleled viewing experience. By adding a high-end color filter that enhances red, blue and green purity, this TV is able to cover more than 80%t of BT.2020 colour space standards." Indeed.

The TV also has other obligatory features, such as a glossy filter panel, 240Hz refresh rate, built-in HEVC support (for 4K streaming via Netflix and Amazon) and VP9 support (the 4K codec in use by YouTube). Connectivity comes through 3 HDMI 2.0 ports.

Meanwhile smart TV features include Miracast support and a gaggle of streaming apps.

The Smart Laser Backlight Ultra HDTV ships from May 2015 in either 58- (58PFL8900) or 65-inch (65PFL8900) sizes.
