Quantum Dots for 2015 LG 4K TVs

LG announces it will show off new UHD/4K TVs featuring quantum dot technology at CES 2015-- a "complement" to the company's existing LCD and OLED models promising wider colour palettes and improved colour saturation.

LG 4K tVQuantum dot technology uses a film of nano crystals (aka "quantum dots") in front of an In-Plane Switching (IPS) LCD backlight. The quantum dots range from 2 to 10 nanometers in size, and emit different colours depending on the size.

LG also claims the quantum dot film improves viewing angles by over 30% compared to LCD/LED TVs, while manufacturing involves no camdmium or other toxic heavy metals.

“Quantum dot’s vibrant and vivid color reproduction capabilities brings LG’s LCD TVs to the next level when it comes to picture quality,” the company adds. “The addition of UHD TV with quantum dot technology to our TV lineup positioned under our award-winning OLED TVs further establishes LG as a leading provider of the most diverse and innovative TV display technologies in the industry.”
