LG Brings WebOS Back... on TVs

LG prepares to reveal its adaptation of webOS as a smart TV platform at CES 2014, claiming to have an easy to use interface based around the concepts of "simple connection," "simple switching" and "simple discovery."

LG webOSThe Korean company acquired the ill-fated operating system from HP back in February 2013, employing the remainders of the ex-Palm webOS team at the LG Silicon Valley Lab.

Originally designed for mobile devices, webOS will not find use in LG smartphones and tablets since the company is reportedly committed to Android. Instead it will appear in over 70% of the 2014 LG Smart TV portfolio.

The LG take on webOS promises easy installation thanks to "Bean Bird," an animated character guiding users through initial setup. Further features include an app store (with apps including Twitter, Netflix, Hulu and Vudu), built-in web browser and control via voice and gesture.

As well as software CES 2014 sees LG showing off the usual array of massive TVs-- including the 105-inch Curved UHD TV (model 105Uc9), supposedly the first curved TV with a 21:9 aspect ratio, and the UB9800 4K UHD TV lineup, with 65-, 79-, 84- and 98-inch models featuring enhanced upscaling technology and a bult-in 4K HEVC 60p decoder.
