According to ABI Research 4K/UHD TV has the potential to become the next big thing in TV, as declining prices should facilitate adoption through normal upgrade cycles during the 2013-2018 period.
The analyst predicts Asia-Pacific, with China in particular, will lead in 4K TV shipments, even if N. America will be the first market with adoption rates reaching 5% (in 2017) and 10% (by end 2018).
“Despite a very limited installed base there have already been a number of 4K trials from broadcasters, pay TV operators, and satellite operators," ABI says. "While many point to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and Sochi Winter Olympics as highlights for 4K, these events will have a minimal impact on 4K adoption-– it’s simply too early.”
Despite only selling "a few" of its $2 million IMAX Private Theatres to date, CEO Richard Gelfond says the experience has provided an entry point into the home theater market. IMAX now wants to find the right partners for a lower-cost solution.
IMAX recently bought a stake in Prima (Prima Cinema's same-day-as-theaters movie player) in return for both a Chinese distribution exclusive as well as a technology deal. IMAX use the know-how from the Prima Cinema Player in its Private Theatre systems allowing downloadable, IMAX-quality theatrical releases at home.
He told investors, “In parallel, we’ve been putting together the pieces to create an integrated, end-to-end home theater solution at a lower price point market that would include hardware, software and content. To this end, we are in the midst of identifying the right partners for such an endeavor. Rest assured that cash flow growth is our priority, so if we do anything, it will be done in a measured way that doesn’t risk significant capital.”
Extron Electronics introduces the XTP T FB 202, a two-input XTP transmitter in a unique form factor designed for floor boxes commonly used in European AV installations.
The XTP T FB 202 can be conveniently mounted into a variety of floor boxes from OBO Bettermann, MK by Honeywell, Electraplan, and PUK. This XTP transmitter sends HDMI or RGBHV video, audio, control, and Ethernet up to 330 feet (100 meters) over a single CATx cable.
It is HDCP-compliant and supports computer-video to 1920x1200, including HDTV 1080p/60 Deep Color and 2K. The XTP T FB 202 features automatic switching between inputs with selectable prioritization, and can be powered over the same CATx cable. The XTP T FB 202 is designed for use in XTP Systems for signal distribution and long-distance transmission between remote endpoints.
FSR’s new DR-SOCK is a creative cable-pulling tool designed to simplify and accelerate every installation requiring cables and connectors.
The DR-SOCK is pre-assembled, easily accessible in frustration-proof packaging and re-useable. It protects cables and connectors from being damaged by taking the stress off the connection points while pulling through a conduit.
The design opens up to 1.25 inches, and features brightly colored sleeve tips to enable easy identification and a steel ring to allow quick and positive attachment of a pull snake. DR-SOCK can be used to safely pull FSR’s new Digital Ribbon Cables as well as others with connector shells.
Recently Vision introduced a cost-effective VGA-over-Cat5 transmitter and receiver set which integrates into their Techconnect faceplate: now they have added an HDMI product in the same format.
The HDMI-over-Cat5 transmitter is an HDMI module which clips into the Techconnect faceplate. The receiver is a compact 82 x 44 x 24mm box which can be hidden at the display device. It supports 1080P (1920 x 1080) over 30m of Cat5e cable or 50m of Cat6 cable. Power adaptors are included for each end.
Vision says their HDMI modules have doubled in sales in the last year, and their newly introduced 5/10/15m HDMI cables are selling well.
