The second generation of SmartThings home automation products, including a Hub and sensors (as in the one following last year's acquisition of the company by Samsung) will get a September release.
The product lineup will include an updated SmartThings Hub, new sensors and an enhanced mobile App. The company says customers do not need to buy the new Hub in order to continue using SmartThings devices, and upgrading to the new model will require reconnection of current devices.
The new generation is supposedly more reliable than the old, since it handles processing locally instead of the cloud-- meaning it continues running even if internet connection is down.
