MSE Audio Redesigns HV Subwoofers

MSE Audio starts shipping the Phase Technology HV subwoofer line-- specifically the HV101-LP, HV101-II and HV121-II, all featuring treated pulp drivers with high-excursion rubber surrounds.

MSE Audio subwooferEach sub includes on-board DSP smart limiting to monitor and adjust output for dynamic, undistorted bass, along with gain control, phase switch, variable crossover, L&R inputs and a dedicated LFE input.

The HV101-LP is a "low profile" subwoofer, meaning customers can place it underneath couches, tables and other furniture to hide it within a room. Along with the entire HV subwoofer line it features a 40 - 250Hz variable crossover with a 24dB/Octave low pass + LFE and 150W of maximum power.

The latest addition to the Electro-Voice EV-Innovation family of installation-dedicated loudspeakers is the EVC-- a 5-model series designed for wide range of small/medium installations.

Electro-VoiceThree (8-, 12-, 15-inch) 2-way trapezoidal models are aimed at applications demanding wide bandwidth, vertical and horizontal directivity control and high efficiency from a compact, cost-effective package. Two coverage patters are available for each size, all with rotatable waveguides. The Variable Intensity (VI) model features a 12-inch 2-way design with a unique compound waveguide able to evenly cover a defined rectangular audience area with almost no variation in sound quality and minimal change in level. An 18-inch subwoofer completes the lineup for use with any of the full-range systems.

Sonos Intros Alexa-Capable Beam

Sonos confirms rumours with a launch of a successor to the Playbar and  Playbase soundbars-- the Beam, a miniature soundbar equipped with the Amazon Alexa providing voice-controlled smarts.

Sonos BeamThe Beam is smaller than previous Sonos soundbars, even if it features similarly minimalist fabric-coated stylings in either black or white finishes. It is wall-mountable, and offers just one HDMI-ARC port and an ethernet jack in terms of connectivity. HDMI-ARC allows compatible TVs to send audio straight to the soundbar with one cable, regardless of source. In case customers lack a media source with ARC capability an optical audio adapter is included.

Are customers still buying CD players? NAD insists that is exactly the case with the C 538, a high-performance CD player the company claims can extract "the very best sound" from the humble compact disc.

NAD C 538The C 538 lies somewhere between the C 568 and C546BEE in the NAD CD player hierarchy. It offers both analogue and digital output, with a Wolfson 24-bit/192kHz DAC feeding coax and optical outputs for connection with a stereo amplifier digital input or external DAC. As well as CDs it handles CD-R/CD-RW discs, allowing users to burn MP3 or WMA files on disc for longer playlists.

Polk Audio is the next company to launch a smart speaker-- the Polk Assist, a speaker using Google Assistant for hands-free control of music and connected smart home devices.

Polk AssistThe Polk Assist also features a built-in Chromecast, allowing customers to group multiple Chromecast-enabled speakers and soundbars to create a multiroom setup using compatible audio apps, including Pandora, TuneIn, Google Play Music, iHeartRadio, NPR and Spotify. The Google Home app provides setup and control. Connectivity comes via wifi.
