Roku Takes on Wireless Speakers

  • PDF

Cord-cutting STB maker Roku looks to cut audio cables as it announces the Roku TV Wireless Speakers-- a pair of, well, wireless speakers able to pair with Roku-powered hardware via wifi.

Roku wireless speakerThe Roku wireless speakers are reminiscent of the HomePod, and are designed to work exclusively with Roku co-branded TVs. They run on "Roku Connect," a combination of hardware and software allowing the speakers to pair with all Roku OS devices available on the network. Once connected to the TV, the speakers play "optimised sound" from all other connected devices, including cable boxes, antennas and even mobile devices paired via Bluetooth.

Roku fails to detail the actual hardware specifications of the speakers, but they do not appear aimed at audiophile customers. Instead they should be ideal for customers wanting an easy means to improve on built-in TV audio, without the apparent complications involved with AVRs or soundbars. As such, the Roku TV Wireless Speakers also lack a voice-controlled assistant, with control instead coming solely through remote.

The Wireless Speakers hit the market from October 2018.
