June Launch for Sonos Smart Speaker?

  • PDF

Sonos sends out press invites for an event taking place in San Francisco on 6 June 2018-- one featuring an image a hand looking to choose from multiple remotes with the tagline "you're better than this."

Sonos inviteWhat the event will actually involve is anyone's guess, but if the grapevine is to be believed the answer is a successor to either the Playbar or Playbase. According to an FCC listing unearthed last month by Variety, Sonos is working on product codenamed model S14, "a high-performance all-in-one home theater smart speaker and part of Sonos’ home sound system.”

Interestingly, the listing also mentions an HDMI port, a first for Sonos home theatre hardware. Such connectivity not only provides support for audio formats such as Dolby Atmos, but also allows for deeper integration with the rest of the home theatre.

Sonos already has a smart speaker, the Sonos One. Technically a refresh of the Play:1, the One is a small cuboid speaker with a built-in 6-microphone array and adaptive voice suppression algorithm allowing users to speak to Amazon Alexa.

Of course, we will know all about what Sonos has in store come next month.
