An Electric Jukebox for TV-Based Streaming

  • PDF

The Electric Jukebox plans to rival the likes of Spotify and Apple Music with audio streaming based on hardware, not software-- specifically a Chromecast-style dongle and wand-like remote control.

Electric JukeboxThe device includes a year-long subscription to a streaming service offering "millions" of songs, and plugs to TVs via HDMI. It also includes a 3.5mm line-out port for the addition of external speakers, and connects to the internet via wifi. Interestingly connection to the Electric Jukebox service requires no user account or password, and can only be accessed through the TV-connected dongle.

Control comes through the aforementioned remote, a stripped-down motion-sensitive number complete with microphone for voice search. Meanwhile the TV UI offers just 3 options (My Music, Discovery and Search), and includes curated playlists from the likes of Sheryl Crow, Robbie Williams and Alesha Dixon.

The makers of the Electric Jukebox also refuse to add further smartphone or laptop control, since its mission statement is to bring back the idea of people enjoying music with little or no distraction from other devices. You know, just like the old days.

"Whilst some may be comfortable with Spotify and Apple Music and spending hours configuring these services on specialist streaming devices, the vast majority of consumers really want something that works instantly," the company claims.

The Electric Jukebox is currently available on a preorder basis in the UK, with purchase including a one-year premium streaming subscription.
